Joo Chiat is where I take people who have already seen Marina Bay and want colour, tiles, and a street that still feels lived in. The Peranakan terrace houses on Koon Seng Road are the postcard. The rest of the evening is quieter lanes, spice from open kitchens, and shutters coming down after 7 p.m.

Koon Seng first, Joo Chiat Road later

Do not start on the main road. It is buses, delivery bikes, and shopfronts competing for attention. I walk guests along Koon Seng Road while the light is still on the pastel facades — pink, mint, grey, terracotta — then cut through the smaller lanes toward Joo Chiat Place. Those side streets are residential: potted plants, folding chairs, and the five-foot way that keeps you under cover when a tropical shower hits.

Murals are not the point — the tiles are

Wall paintings of tradespeople photograph well. I still stop, but I spend longer on the ceramic tiles, the carved plaster under the eaves, and which houses still have families upstairs. After 9 p.m. keep voices down. This is not a nightclub strip; people sleep behind those shutters.

Katong laksa, then a sit-down

If we eat, it is usually a bowl of Katong laksa — coconut gravy, rice noodles, cut with scissors — before the evening walk, not after. Dinner later can be Peranakan if you want ayam buah keluak; I keep a short list of weeknight walk-ins rather than the reservation-only rooms. The walk itself ends with a drink on a shophouse five-foot way so you can watch dinner service start without rushing to the next “must-see”.

How I time it

  • MRT to Paya Lebar or Eunos, then a short bus or taxi — do not walk the whole way from town in the afternoon heat.
  • Arrive around 4:30 p.m. so the facades still have daylight for photos.
  • Two hours for the streets; three if laksa and a drink are included.

This loop is the opposite of a Marina Bay evening. No Helix Bridge, no light show. If that is what you want, read the waterfront note instead and book the river walk. Joo Chiat is for colour, food, and a neighbourhood that does not empty when the office towers switch off.
